Introducing text for conferences and events:
Prof. G. V. Sreekumar is Professor and former Head of the IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, India. His expertise spans Typography, Calligraphy, Publication Design, Information Graphics, Design Pedagogy, and Visual Semantics. He is also an adjunct professor at IIT Kanpur.
He studied Applied Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara, and pursued Master of Design in Visual Communication at IDC, IIT Bombay. Under the mentorship of the eminent typographer and calligrapher Prof. R. K. Joshi, he specialized in Typography, Publication Design, and Information Graphics.
Prior to joining IIT Bombay in 2000, he worked as an Art Director, Illustrator and Information Graphics Designer with leading publishing houses such as The Times of India, Indian Express and Jasubhai Digital Media. He was instrumental in designing several well-known Indian magazines including CHIP, Digit, Chandamama, Overdrive, Society, and Savvy.
He is the founder of Typography society of India and organises online lectures on Typography by noted designers across the world.
He has also created video films based of calligraphy collaborations. His short film "Vaishnav Jan to", based on the famous bhajan of the same name, dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and released on 2nd October 2024 received world wide appreciation.
In 2024, he was invited by "SADEA" (South Asian Design Educators' Allaince"), Chicago to take part in the Posters on Peace project. His poster is among the 20 posters being exhibited across the world now.
His calligraphy works were exhibited in Korea as part of the 18th Chengou Jikji World Calligraphy Exhibition in 2021.
His chapter titled "Indian Calligraphy: A living art form shaped by culture and innovation" was published in the book "Akshar Bharati" edited by Padmashri Mr Achyut Palav in 2025.
He is also a member of the Editorial Board of IDR Journal, housed at the Department of Integrated Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.
Prof Sreekumar is the co-chair in organising the international conference "Typography Day" from 2008 till date.
Alongside academics, Prof. Sreekumar has consulted widely for corporate clients and conducted professional workshops through IIT Bombay’s Continuing Education Programs. He has also served as visiting faculty at premier institutions including NID, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, M.S. University Vadodara, Delhi Technological University, IIT Kanpur and contributes to academic development as a member of several Boards of Studies.
Prof Sreekumar was the chairperson of the National Focus Group committee on “Publication of Quality Textual & Non-textual materials” of NEP.
Prof. Sreekumar has mentored generations of design students, notably Prof. D. Udaya Kumar, designer of the Indian rupee symbol (₹), and Prof. Girish Dalvi, designer of several Indian typefaces. Widely regarded as a thought leader in design and design education, he pioneered the concept of Human–Human Interaction (HHI) at IDC, focusing on the humanitarian dimensions of design practice.
